I purchased an airline ticket some months back. It is good til Dec. but doubt I can use it now. The airlines will not give me money back. Anyone know what avenue I could pursue on this issue?
I tried to donate it to a serviceman who needed to get to his family.. United Airlines refused.

Nope, airline tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable. You could try asking them if you could donate it to a charity, though.
The rules of your ticket to be nametransferred as it being refundable thats also highly unlikey but it depends on the rules of your ticket almost all coach tickets are nonrefundable.
For wanting the ticket it is probably nonrefundable nontransferable youre stuck with the cheapest tickets.
For that to convert your ticket to miles and donate that there is also link on their website about charity httpwwwunitedcompagearticle0136300html at least you to mile donation and military families httpwwwfisherhouseorgprogramsheromilesshtml.
