I am on vacation for the holidays at my parent’s house. I had to go to the hospital a few days ago and now I have to have my gall bladder removed. The procedure is normally a laproscopic one, but because of a prior operation it looks like my will probably be an open procedure which will require a much longer recovery period (approximately 2 weeks until I will be able to travel). We are scheduled to fly home on the 4th (surgery is on the 3rd), do I still have to pay the necessary fees to change mine, my husband’s and daughter’s airfare or do they waive the fee for medical emergencies?

Those sorts of details are almost always spelled out in your confirmation itinerary

You probably will, but there is no harm in calling and telling your story. They MIGHT be willing to help in some way.
